I think we all can agree we were very hopeful in 2019 that 2020 was gonna be the year for something big… something surprising! And, we thought the surprise was gonna be GOOD!
Well, here I am and we are deep into fall of 2020 and the surprise has not been good. It’s been a sad, frustrating, and moody year where we all have been trying to keep our hopes up. The devastation of Covid-19 has hit us like a big gut-punch. 200,000+ people have lost their lives. There’s nothing good about people having to say goodbye to loved ones via FaceTime. Just so sad. No one knew we’d all be wearing masks anytime we were in public in 2020. I felt this year was important enough to make sure I did a blog post about it. I am feeling grateful, up to this point, that myself or my family has not been infected.
That’s the big picture of it… however, as a small, handmade shop owner, I’ve been trying to keep up with the growing need for masks. We’ve been wearing mask since March and based on what my doctor told me yesterday, we will be wearing masks for another two years! Everywhere we go, we see people wearing masks. When someone isn’t wearing a mask, I don’t know about you, but I get mad and sad for them, for us. It’s just not what’s considered normal anymore.
As a maker, I really don’t want to continue to sew masks for another two years. It’s not very creative. It’s just sitting and being productive. Kind of a downer. But, I feel obligated to offer them so others can be safe. Let’s hope we can all agree wearing a mask keeps us all safe. And that it’s not a political decision… it’s a human decision.
After much thought and fear, I decided to travel in October to the west coast to see my granddaughter, daughter and son-in-law. I was diligent in actions while traveling, wearing a mask, washing my hands. I even changed my clothes after I arrived at the airport, just in case germs were on my clothing. I didn’t want to infect my granddaughter! My travels home by car (that’s a whole other story that’s pretty amazing!), were the same. Being diligent to stay in hotels that protected it’s customers, always wearing a mask and wiping surfaces anytime you are in public. I stayed safe and went home without infecting myself or anyone else I was around. I felt really good about that.
Going into the holiday season with Covid-19 will look really different. I want to make sure you and everyone I know are safe. I am currently offering masks at 50% off. I feel like this opportunity to make income from this infectious disease has come and gone for me. I’ve made the money that my time has invested in creating masks. So, now I can offer them at a really reduced rate moving forward as a service to keep others safe. Losing family members over the holidays is hard enough, let’s make sure we are all doing our best by keeping each other safe and wearing those masks, washing our hands, and keeping our homes sanitized.
I want to take a minute to thank the Burrows family! I met Jill through Instagram and she has become a sweet friend to me. She is always willing to snap product photos for me or help me with fun photos like these for social media. People like this are rare! I will always be grateful that I found someone with a heart of gold, like Jill. (Just click the links provided and go follow Jill for yourself to see what I’m talking about.)
If you’ve read this far…. thank you! I don’t often share my thoughts and feelings. But, every once in awhile, it feels good to share! Happy Fall! Happy 2020! Do something you feel good about and that will help you feel good about 2020 too!
Much Love!
Vicki S.
